Body of missing N.H. man recovered 12 miles from empty kayak

OGUNQUIT, Maine (AP) — The body of a missing kayaker from New Hampshire was recovered Tuesday by the Maine Marine Patrol.

The search began Sunday for Donald Vardell Jr., 53, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after his overturned kayak was discovered that day near Wood Island at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.

Vardell’s body was found in the ocean late Monday morning by a fisherman 3 miles east of Ogunquit and approximately 12 miles from where his kayak was found, the Maine Marine Patrol said.

Rescue agencies from both Maine and New Hampshire were involved in the search. The Portsmouth Police Department will conduct the investigation into the death, officials said.
