Police investigating after 68-year-old pedestrian struck, killed near Wollaston Beach in Quincy

State police said several bystanders, including nurses and lifeguards from the nearby beach, rushed to help save the 68-year-old man's life.

A 68-year-old man died Saturday after being struck by a Mercedes-Benz SUV while crossing Quincy Shore Drive, state police said in a news release.

The victim, a Canton resident, was hit around 11:22 a.m. in the left lane of a crosswalk near Wollaston Beach, according to state troopers.

Several bystanders, including nurses and lifeguards from the nearby beach, rushed to provide medical aid in efforts to save the man’s life before an ambulance brought him to Boston Medical Center where he later died, state police said. 

The driver of the 2018 Mercedes, a 75-year-old man from Newton, had been reportedly traveling north on Quincy Shore Drive in the left lane when the victim crossed the road.

State troopers said the Newton man remained at the scene after the crash, adding that speed did not appear to have been a factor in the incident.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it will include a review of crosswalk signals, according to the release.

No charges had been filed as of Sunday morning, and State police have not yet identified the victim.
