Police: Driver was traveling at ‘extremely high rate of speed’ prior to fatal Cape Cod crash
The crash happened around 11:14 p.m. Thursday.
A motorist is dead after the vehicle they were driving struck a tree late Thursday night in South Yarmouth and they were ejected from it.
Minutes before the fatal crash, a Yarmouth police officer on patrol saw the vehicle traveling westbound “at an extremely high rate of speed” on Old Main Street, near Salt Works Lane, around 11:12 p.m, police said in a news release on Facebook. The officer began to pursue the vehicle but couldn’t keep an eye on it “because of the extreme rate of speed at which it was traveling.”
About two minutes later, the officer found the vehicle had struck a tree and crashed on Old Main Street near the River Street intersection. The driver, and lone occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
A photo of the scene shared by police shows vehicle parts strewn across the roadway and in what looks like the front yard of a home.
The name of the driver has not been publicly released as authorities notify their family, police said.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 508-775-0445, ext. 2100.
