11-year-old injured when a lit firework explodes in his hand in South Boston

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

An 11-year-old boy sustained an injury to his hand after an older kid handed him a lit firework and it exploded.Police were called to the area near 110 Mercer St. in South Boston around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. There, officers spoke with the boy’s mother, who described how the lit firework erupted, cutting the palm of her son’s hand, Sgt. John Boyle of Boston police told Boston.com.The boy was transported to a local hospital for treatment, Boyle said.Fireworks, which are illegal in the state, have been an ongoing issue in Boston, with Mayor Marty Walsh condemning out-of-state businesses advertising to Massachusetts residents. Boston police reported over 7,800 calls for fireworks before the end of June compared to 139 last June.
