Noose found in tree, racist flyers taped to street signs spur investigations in Yarmouth

Police say the two incidents happened over the course of the last week, just three days apart.

Yarmouth police say they are investigating two “disturbing” incidents that occurred in the last week: A noose was found hanging from a tree at a private beach and 20 flyers “promoting white men to join [their] local ‘white nationalists'” were taped to street signs, utility poles, and fences around town.“Both cases are being taken seriously in order to determine the person(s) responsible,” Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson said in a Facebook post Tuesday. “These overtly inflammatory actions are denounced by the Yarmouth Police department. I strongly believe that this [is] not representative of Yarmouth and was likely performed by a few troubled individuals who are hateful.”

Police said they received a report on June 17 that a noose was hanging from a tree at a private association beach on a pond off Pump House Lane in West Yarmouth.

Two teens were reportedly seen handling the rope before the noose was discovered, but no one saw who put the noose in the tree, Frederickson said.

Three days later around 6:41 a.m., Frederickson said a responding patrol officer removed 20 flyers that read, “You will not destroy us, you will not replace us,” and called for white men to join “local white nationalists.”

The flyers, which included the words, “White Power,” were reportedly taped to street signs, utility poles, and fences along Buck Island Road; Higgins Crowell Road, south of Route 28; and on Route 28, east and west of Higgins Crowell Road.

Frederickson said Yarmouth Police Department’s detective division was investigating both incidents, adding that officers also notified state police’s Commonwealth Fusion Center about the flyers.

“It is clearly understood that these incidents create fear, division and distrust in our community,” Frederickson said. “Please know that Yarmouth Police Department is committed to addressing issues of hate.”

Police urged anyone with information on either incident to contact the department at [email protected] or 508-775-0445 ext. 0.
