1 drowned, 1 injured in Mashpee boating accident

Authorities say one man was taken to the hospital with serious leg injuries from a boat’s propeller.

A person drowned and one man was taken to the hospital with significant leg injuries Tuesday after a boating accident on Wakeby Pond in Mashpee, authorities said. Mashpee police, firefighters, and harbormaster personnel responded to a 911 call around 2:17 p.m., locating a boat with three passengers on it, Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore said in a statement. One man had serious leg injuries from the boat’s propeller, according to the DA’s office, and was taken to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for treatment.  Miltimore said passengers informed first responders that another member of their group, 57-year-old Boston resident Ricardo Ortiz, was still missing in the water. Authorities reportedly searched for Ortiz until about 6:04 p.m., when his body was recovered from the pond. While a preliminary investigation suggested no foul play, Miltimore said Mashpee and state police are continuing to investigate the incident.
