A Tewksbury resident reported seeing ‘what appeared to be a monkey.’ Now police are trying to catch it.
“DO NOT touch the monkey!!"
A monkey might be on the loose in Tewksbury.Police there say they responded to Michael Street around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after a resident reported seeing “what appeared to be a monkey in the tree line of their backyard.”Officers and the town’s Animal Control used ATVs and drones to search the area, noting that it’s next to Tewksbury State Hospital, but did not see the apparent escaped ape.“At this time, we are not sure what type of animal the resident may have seen,” police said in a news release. “Animal Control will be setting up cameras and traps in the area to find the animal so that we can identify it and, if necessary, relocate it to a safe location.”Shawsheen Animal Hospital, sharing a grainy photo of the animal on Facebook, told residents to be on the lookout for the alleged monkey, and told them to call police.“DO NOT touch the monkey!!” the animal hospital said, adding that monkeys can be “dangerous” and can carry Herpes B, which can be serious for humans.
Police also said not to feed or approach the animal and to call them if it’s seen at 978-851-7373.
