More than 60 residents displaced following Boston YMCA fire

Firefighters say the blaze, which started around 12:50 a.m. Thursday, sent one resident to the hospital.

One resident was taken to the hospital and more than 60 others were displaced after a fire broke out overnight Wednesday at the YMCA of Greater Boston, fire officials said. The blaze started around 12:50 a.m. on the seventh floor of the building at 316 Huntington Ave., causing an estimated $100,000 in damage, the Boston Fire Department said in a tweet.

The Red Cross of Massachusetts said the building has both fire and water damage, and noted that they are working with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh’s office to help the 66 displaced residents and determine when, or if, they can return to their homes.

Firefighters also thanked the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for providing the residents with transportation.

“Thanks to the ⁦@MBTA⁩ for providing transportation for the displaced,” fire officials said in a tweet. “A coordinated effort by multiple city agencies, working together to ensure the safety of the residents.”

Authorities are investigating the incident, and no further information was available Thursday morning.
