One of the residents, Denise Ortiz, said a neighbor first alerted her to the fire.

“Her daughter came running downstairs, banged on our door, and said, ‘The house is on fire! Get everybody up!,’” she told WCVB. “We just ran out the way we were.”

Along with the newborn, a 3-year-old boy also lived in the home. Authorities believe three of the units, if not all four, were lived in at the time of the blaze, according to The Boston Globe.

WBZ reported that knocking the fire down was “difficult,” according to Medford fire Deputy Chief Brian Cronin. The house is in a dense neighborhood adjacent to the Mystic River.
