High school seniors are facing an uncertain future amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the prospects of two Boston Public School students were just lifted.
Scholar Athletes, a local nonprofit with the mission of supporting academic achievement through athletics, surprised two seniors with full four-year college scholarships today. The scholarships were granted to the students during video calls that they thought were a final interview for admission. One of the students, Ainsley Pena, received the announcement in a drawstring bag delivered by a piloted drone.
Pena, who goes to Snowden International High School in Back Bay, received a scholarship for Curry College in Milton, while Janelys Delvalle from The English High School in Jamaica Plain got a grant to Regis College in Weston.
The young women, who are members of their schools’ Scholar Athletes Zones, were recommended for the grants based on academic performance, participation in the program, and financial need. Pena played football as the only female player on her team, and Delvalle is a varsity basketball player. The former is interested in careers in sports management, sports therapy, or zoology; the latter interned at a local hospital and wants to become a surgeon.
