27-year-old Somerville bicyclist struck, killed in Arlington Tuesday night

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Massachusetts Avenue near the Appleton Street intersection.

A 27-year-old Somerville man is dead after authorities say he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Arlington Tuesday evening.Charles Proctor was identified by officials as the victim of the crash. He and a 32-year-old woman were biking on Massachusetts Avenue near the Appleton Street intersection around 6:30 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to a news release from the Middlesex district attorney’s office.Through an investigation, authorities believe the two cyclists were traveling east on Massachusetts Avenue and a Hyundai Sonata, driven by a 20-year-old Cambridge man, was traveling west when the crash happened.Proctor was brought to Lahey hospital where he died from his injuries. The female bicyclist was brought to a nearby hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries, the release said.The Hyundai driver, as well as two passengers, remained on scene. Authorities found a loaded shotgun in the vehicle’s trunk, and the driver is being charged with possessing a loaded shotgun or rifle in a vehicle, according to officials. He will be summonsed to Cambridge District Court in the future to answer to that charge. He had a license to have the firearm, officials said.The district attorney’s office, state police, and Arlington police were continuing to investigate what happened.
