The break happened around 9:18 p.m. near 500 Harrison Ave. and Perry Street, where the department responded to the scene.
“The street has buckled, there are multiple cars under water,” firefighters said in a Tweet. “Streets in the area are flooded.”
Hours later, Boston Fire Chief Neal Mullane said Boston police had taken over, blocking the road so utility companies could continue to work.

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission said they also had crews investigating the “possible break” of a 30-inch diameter pipe. They warned residents of brown water before turning off the water main to address the issue by flushing certain areas out.
Soon after, the commission tweeted that residents’ water services should return back to normal, and urged people to let their tap run until the water clears up.
Update: The water main has been shut down. Residents’ services should return soon.Residents experiencing discolored water, we have been flushing areas. Run the tap a water should clear.
