Here’s why all the train and bus horns will sound at the same time Thursday

Boston and the surrounding area will be alive with the sound of train and bus horns Thursday afternoon as the MBTA participates in the #SoundTheHorn campaign.
The campaign has been organized to honor public transit workers during the COVID-19 pandemic for providing transportation — especially to essential workers, from those who work in healthcare, to grocery store employees, to first responders, according to a news release from the MBTA.
At 3 p.m. the trains and buses will sound their horns twice for a second each time.
Other transportation services, like Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority are also participating, the release said.
“These men and women are the backbone of our communities, oftentimes providing the only source of transit to our neighborhoods,” MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said in the release. “Today being One Boston Day makes this effort especially poignant as we honor Boston’s resiliency, generosity, and strength.”
Those who hear the buses or trains are asked to post the encounters on social media using #SoundTheHorn.
