Stop & Shop shared a list of their top 10 best-selling items from March with Boston.com, here they are:

  • Toilet paper
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Paper towels
  • Bleach
  • Pasta
  • Canned goods (i.e. soups)
  • Boxed dinners
  • Eggs
  • Flour

A spokeswoman for the grocery store, Jennifer Brogan, told Boston.com that they have seen a surprising uptick in baking items over the past few weeks. She said a few items in particular, like sugar and yeast, may not have made the top 10 but are definitely in high demand.

Staff have never experienced this type of need for certain products, and, with paper and cleaning items topping the charts in such high demand, many manufacturers have instituted nationwide limits on how many key products are available, according to the supermarket’s website (Stop & Shop doesn’t have customer limits on the items but asks shoppers to “shop responsibly”).

Brian Houghton, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Food Association, said he’s observed a similar trend in stores beyond Stop & Shop.

You can tell just by going through the stores the past few weeks,” Houghton said in an email, “that eggs, paper products, particularly toilet paper was flying off the shelves.”
