From within an intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, a group of nurses is making a plea: Stay home, and if you have personal protective equipment, donate it to your local hospital.

A recent video posted on Instagram, shot by Russell Gallen, shows the nurses gathered in an ICU dedicated to COVID-19 patients, each wearing a mask. According to nurse Sarahjane Hall, it’s the only mask they’ll receive that day.

“We are caring for the sickest population of corona patients and are preparing for the numbers to continue to grow,” Hall says as her coworkers stand around her. “Working in an ICU we are faced with life and death every day and are dedicated to saving as many lives as possible, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared.”

Hall notes the ongoing shortage of PPE, and how the one mask they get per day is what protects them from spreading the virus to each other, and to their loved ones when they’re finished work.

She and other nurses are “scared and heartbroken” for the families of patients who can’t visit while their loved one is hospitalized.

“But our patients are not alone,” Hall said. “We are all here. We are strong and united and will not give up in the fight to save lives.”

Hall then asks for the donations of personal protective equipment, and urges the public to stay home.

“We all have a part to play in flattening the curve,” she said. “We are begging you to do yours so we can do ours.”
