‘We see a lot of odd things, but nothing like this’: Cat rescued from trash bag in the back of garbage truck

The cat is recovering at the Humane Society for Greater Nashua.

A female cat in Nashua, New Hampshire is lucky that a sanitation worker heard her cries from inside a garbage bag last Thursday. Two workers were manning a garbage truck in the French Hill area of the city and, when the truck pulled over, one of them, Jeff Currier, noticed one of the bags was moving, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.“He had seen a bag moving and heard crying sounds,” Carla Thibodeau, Currier’s coworker, told the Union Leader. “At first he thought it was a child crying. He waved for me to get out of the truck and when I walked over I could see claws coming through the bag.”Within the tied trash bag was a cat with bright orange fur mixed with black and white splotches. Currier tore a hole in the bag, and the cat pushed her head out, the newspaper said.“We could have crushed her, or squished her,” Thibodeau said, according to the Union Leader.Police were called, and the cat was moved to the front of the truck, where she cozied up against the truck’s heater.Police were called, and authorities believe the cat had wound up in the bag by accident, the newspaper said. Lt. Pat Hannon said an elderly person “was pretty distraught” by what happened. The cat was brought to the Humane Society for Greater Nashua by city Animal Control, according to a Facebook post from Nashua Public Works. She’s recovering there, and police said they don’t know if the original owner will attempt to get her back, the Union Leader reported.“She is a beautiful cat. If I didn’t already have three cats at home, I would have taken her,” Thibodeau told the newspaper. “We see a lot of odd things, but nothing like this.”
