Update: 16-year-old girl killed, 8 hurt in chain-reaction crash in Seekonk

Four cars were involved in the deadly pile-up.

SEEKONK, Mass. (AP) — A 16-year-old girl was killed and eight other people were injured in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 195 in Seekonk Sunday night, state police said.

The crash occurred at about 8 p.m. when an eastbound Chevrolet pickup truck couldn’t stop in time as it approached traffic slowing for a car fire, and rear-ended a Chrysler sedan, state police said in a statement.

The car was pushed into the rear of an Acura, which was pushed into the rear of a Lexus.

A rear seat passenger in the Chrysler was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island where she was pronounced dead. A 40-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy in the Chrysler were also hospitalized.

Two people in the pickup, including a 17-year-old girl, and four people in their 20s in the Acura were all taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not considered life threatening, police said.

No names were released.

The investigation is ongoing.

Note: This story has been corrected to show that the victim was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, instead of Rhode Island Hospital, per updated information from state police.
