Fire officials said heavy flames spread from the porch around 5:19 p.m., taking over the 22 Bligh St. home, killing the family dog, and leaving the property in shambles.

Neighbor Pam Indorato told NBC Boston that her and a friend were sitting on her porch when they noticed the blaze.

“We kicked down the door and woke the mother up,” Indorato told the station.

The pair quickly maneuvered through the home, telling the mother to grab her baby and then exiting with them through the back door.

“I ran into a burning house but I knew there was a baby in there,” Indorato told Boston 10. “That was my concern.”

Ayer firefighters said Indorato and her friend took a great personal risk, but their presence and rescue efforts were invaluable.

Their actions likely prevented a tragedy,” fire officials said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
