Plymouth man taken to hospital by helicopter after fuel tank explosion

The 83-year-old was reportedly found suffering from serious injuries to his head, firefighters said.

An elderly Plymouth man was thrown about 12 feet in the air on Monday when an explosion and fire erupted from the boat fuel tank he was working on, firefighters said. Chief G. Edward Bradley reported in a press release that the Plymouth Fire Department responded around 3:12 p.m. to a home on State Road, where firefighters found an 83-year-old reportedly suffering from serious injuries to his head.He was brought to the Manomet fire station in an ambulance, where he was then flown by a medical helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Bradley said. No updates have been released on the man’s condition. Bradley said after crews extinguished the fire, they discovered the man had been using a grinder on the fuel tank before a spark ignited the fumes, causing the tank to explode.Firefighters said no other injuries were reported.
