Black ice creates nightmare morning commute, causes crashes around Boston

Serious injuries were reported in at least one of the crashes.

Icy roads snarled morning commutes Thursday, especially in the northeast part of the state, according to state police. Multiple crashes were reported throughout the morning.

A dip in temperatures after Wednesday’s rain was likely be to blame for the dangerous drive into the city Thursday morning.

Patches of black ice were expected to clear up as the sun rose, but not before wreaking havoc on Greater Boston’s roads.

WCVB-5 reported there were serious injuries after a van rolled over into the median on I-95 northbound near exit 51 in Boxford on Endicott Road. It’s not yet known how many people were injured, according to NBC Boston.

Slick roads also caused two cars to lose control on Route 1A south at the General Edwards Bridge, NBC Boston reported.

Two other multi-car crashes were reported on I-95 in Sharon and Needham. It is unclear whether there were any injuries.

“Slippery rain conditions” delayed some commuter rain trains as well, according to the MBTA.
