Greg Skomal was using an underwater camera to get a look at a shark off Cape Cod when the great white moved to get its own up-close look at the researcher.

The senior fisheries scientist for the state Department of Fish and Game who leads the Massachusetts Shark Research program was standing on the pulpit of a boat when the 9-foot female shark breached “inches” below him.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy shared video of the encounter, which took place off Nauset Beach on Nov. 11.

“Inches! Inches, Greg!” someone yells after the dicey moment.

The conservancy said the moment is a “good reminder” to stay vigilant while on the water and follow the shark safety tips

“While out on research trips, we’ve seen white sharks breach and we’ve received multiple reports of breaching white sharks in recent years from fishermen and boaters,” the scientists wrote. “While encounters like this one are rare, this video shows that they can occur. White sharks are wild and unpredictable animals.”

The shark was later tagged by the researchers for their study of the animals’ movements and added to their catalog of tagged white sharks, according to the conservancy. Researchers tagged a record number of sharks — 50 — during the 2019 season.
