Police: Human skull found in Blandford woods

Dog teams that searched the area didn't find any other human remains.

A Blandford resident made a surprising discovery in the woods Sunday morning: a human skull.

State troopers arrived at the scene around 10:30 a.m. and confirmed that the skull appeared human, state police spokesperson Dave Procoplo said in an email.

They brought a dog team trained to detect human remains to the area the skull was found, deep in the woods off Herrick Road, but searches didn’t find anything. Those woods are part of the Knittel Conservation Area, about 25 miles west of Springfield.

Police have not identified to whom the skull belonged.

Officials are asking anyone who goes into that wooded area to keep an eye out for personal belongings such as clothing or — of course — any other human remains.

Anyone who spots anything in that area is encouraged to call State Police-Russell at 413-862-3312 or call 911 and ask to be connected to the State Police-Russell Barracks.
