Video showing East Bridgewater students in blackface, using n-word surfaces online

“The District is in the process of undertaking an investigation into the misconduct.”

East Bridgewater school district officials say they’re investigating after a video surfaced on social media that appeared to show a student in blackface while he and others say the n-word.The video, which was apparently first shared on Snapchat, begins with one person — appearing to be in nearly full blackface — saying the racial slur, then pans over to another who uses the n-word. Another couple of students then say it, their faces partially obstructed, an American flag hanging in the background. In a statement to the community, school Superintendent Elizabeth Legault says the video was recorded off school grounds, and that the district “does not condone” what happened.“Such statements and actions are against the core values of our District and our community,” she wrote. “The District is in the process of undertaking an investigation into the misconduct.”The district held a meeting with students on Monday to talk about it, plus guidance counselors and social workers were also made available.Students and members of the community told NBC10 of the negative effects the video has had.Kristen Hennessy, who said she has five biracial children, called the video “heartless.”“I felt it was very racial, and I think that it was completely wrong,” she told the station. “It’s gotten to the point that my two boys that are currently at the high school they no longer want to be at the high school anymore, they don’t feel comfortable, they don’t feel safe at all.”
