19-year-old fatally struck while checking damage after crash

The incident happened Sunday morning in Wareham.

A 19-year-old man died Sunday after he was struck by a car in Wareham. The teen — identified by police as Jack Quindley, of Carver — had just crashed into a guardrail and was surveying the damage to his vehicle when he was hit by another driver, state police said.

Quindley had been driving a 2000 Nissan Xterra with an 18-year-old man, also from Carver, as a passenger around 6:30 a.m. on I-195 eastbound, according to police. The Nissan then left the roadway before Exit 21 and struck the guardrail, though it’s not yet clear why.

The men got out of the vehicle, which was “disabled partially” in the left travel lane, to look at the damage, police said. A 2008 BMW driven by a 51-year-old man from Hyannis then struck the Nissan and Quindley.

All three men were taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, where Quindley was pronounced dead. The other two men had minor injuries, according to police.

The crash is under investigation.
