A Lunenberg couple raising money to hold their wedding within the next few weeks due to the groom’s terminal cancer diagnosis has met and exceeded their fundraising goal.

And the extra money they take in from an online GoFundMe campaign will go to the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana Farber — where Philip Dwyer, 21, and Katerina Mesa, 25, met while both receiving treatment for cancer several years ago.

“We are so blessed to have so many wonderful people donating to the wedding and offering supports and services to Phil and Kat,” Steve Dwyer, Philip’s father, wrote in an update on the fundraising page on Thursday. “We cannot thank all of you enough!”

The campaign had raised $27,855 as of around 3:45 p.m. Friday, surpassing its goal of $25,000.

The couple plans to marry on Nov. 4 at Gibbet Hill in Groton. Originally, the two had planned to tie the knot sometime next year in Miami, where Mesa is from. But Philip Dwyer recently received news that the osteosarcoma he’s been battling since high school had spread to his lungs. His doctors told him he was out of treatment options, and he’s currently in hospice care.

“When the oncologist said that our time with Phil is short, we decided that we’re just going to do everything that we wanted to do,” Mesa said in a recent interview with WBZ. “One of those things was getting married, the other thing was getting a puppy.”

The two recently became dog parents, and Philip said he’s focusing on what’s important to him.

“Crying and worrying about when it’s going to happen, I’m not going to be able to enjoy the people that I love,” he told WBZ. “I like to focus on the good parts that I still have.”
