Abington community remembers Zaccardi family with vigil

A crowd gathered in Abington on Monday to remember and celebrate the lives of Deirdre Zaccardi and her three children, who were killed last week.

Authorities say 43-year-old Joseph Zaccardi shot his wife Deirdre and their children, 11-year-old Alexis and 9-year-old twins Nathaniel and Kathryn, in their Center Avenue condo. Their bodies were discovered the morning of Oct. 7 when a relative went to the home to pick up the children for school.

Alexis was a student at Abington Middle School, while Nathaniel and Kathryn attended the Woodsdale School.

“Deirdre, Alexis, Nathaniel, and Kathryn are survived by countless friends and family who knew and loved them dearly,” relatives of the 40-year-old mother wrote in her obituary

More than 100 people gathered Monday at Emerald Hall in Abington to share memories of the family, with children drawing pictures to express the grief of losing their classmates, Boston 25 reports

“There are beautiful people who have been lost; we want to remember them for the impact they’ve had on this town and this community,” state Rep. Alyson Sullivan told the station. 

Many signed a condolence book for the family, the Brockton Enterprise reports, and classmates of the children also were given a chance to speak about their friends. The gathering ended with a performance of “Amazing Grace” while the children blew soap bubbles in the air.

“He was super funny and I’m sad he died,” Taddy Krason, 9, said of Nathaniel. “He will always be our friend.”

Ava Wanberg, who was friends the twins, told the Boston Herald she played chase with Kathryn at recess. 

“They were really nice and I miss hugging them,” Ava told the newspaper. “I would always hug them at recess.”

According to the obituary for Deirdre, funeral services for the family will be private.
