Target has plans to open an approximately 11,000-square-foot store in Beacon Hill.

The location, slated for 100 Cambridge St., will be notably smaller than the retailer’s standard, big-box stores — one of dozens of the “small-format” stores that it intends to roll out across the country, Target confirmed in a statement Wednesday.

“As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share — including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date,” the company said in a statement to Boston.com.

The new store format is planned in areas where Target’s traditional stores are simply too big to fit, according to the retailer.

“These formats offer many of the same categories guests expect in a full-size store, with a curated assortment of products tailored to match the needs and preferences of the community,” the statement says. “We plan to open approximately 30 of these stores every year for the next few years.”

The announcement adds to the list of pending store openings for Target across the Bay State.

An 80,000-square-foot store is expected to open at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis this fall. A 27,000-square-foot location is planned in Dorchester’s Fields Corner neighborhood on Geneva Avenue next year, and a 40,000-square-foot location at the North Quincy MBTA station, 289 Hancock St., is also in the works.
