They were sitting at the kitchen table. Then a tree crashed through the ceiling.

Police said the elderly couple who lived in the home were “very lucky to escape injury.”

A tree fell on an Auburn home Monday and punched through the roof all the way into the kitchen, officials said. The home’s residents were seated just feet away at the kitchen table, but no one was injured.

Bill Crosbie, 81, told WBZ he was at the table sorting pills when the tree crashed down.

“It came right down — right where my coffee maker is,” he said. “I’m glad I wasn’t up getting a coffee.”

High winds led to the tree snapping, according to a Facebook post from the Auburn Fire Department.

“The occupants of 103 Rochdale St. were extremely lucky this afternoon,” the post read.

Photos show a branch sticking straight down through the home’s ceiling — right next to the refrigerator.

Crosbie’s daughter told WBZ that after getting her mother out of the home, her father simply texted her a photo of the branch hanging through the ceiling. The text didn’t include any words, she said, just the photo.

“I think of people in other areas where they’ve had hurricanes, tornadoes come through — this is nothing,” Bill told WBZ. “My golf clubs didn’t get hit, so I’m in business.”

Andrew Sluckis, chief of the Auburn Police Department, tweeted that the couple was “very lucky to escape injury.”

“Yeah, I’m a lucky guy,” Crosbie told WBZ. “For a lot of reasons.”

The station reported the home will need an estimated $25,000 in repairs and was deemed unlivable by building inspectors. Bill and his wife are staying with their daughter for now.
