A woman was hit in the O’Neill Tunnel. Police say she exited a moving Uber.

The 29-year-old from Mattapan was in critical condition on Monday afternoon, state police said.

A 29-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries Monday morning when she was struck by a vehicle inside Boston’s O’Neill Tunnel after she got out of the moving car she was a passenger in, according to authorities.State police said troopers responded around 7:39 a.m. to a report of a female pedestrian hit by a vehicle on I-93 southbound in the area of Exit 23 in the tunnel. Responding officers and Boston EMS found the 29-year-old Mattapan woman in the roadway with life-threatening injuries.She was transported to Tufts Medical Center for treatment, where she remained in critical condition on Monday afternoon, police said. The preliminary investigation indicates the woman was picked up at the departures level of Terminal C at Logan Airport by an Uber driver, a 27-year-old woman, according to police.“The driver made an agreement to drive her fare to her residence in Boston for an agreed upon price,” police said.The ride-share vehicle, a 2012 Mazda Cx9 sport utility vehicle, left the airport using the Sumner Tunnel and accessed I-93 southbound via the Haymarket on-ramp.“While driving on Route 93 southbound inside the tunnel, just prior to Exit 23, the victim exited the moving vehicle from the rear passenger side door,” police said. “ The victim was then struck by a 2015 Jeep Cherokee being operated by a 31-year-old Charlestown man.”Both drivers remained on the scene and have been interviewed by police. Police said the crash, and reason the 29-year old got out of the car, remained under investigation.After the crash, state police closed the two middle lanes of the highway for about an hour and warned drivers to expect delays. All lanes were reopened just after 9:30 a.m.
