3-alarm fire tears through Halifax restaurant
Video from the scene shows flames shooting through the building.
A three-alarm fire gutted Shank’s Restaurant at the Country Club of Halifax late Sunday night. The owner says it may have been a discarded cigarette butt that started the fire, but that is unconfirmed by fire officials publicly. The Halifax Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the country club at 100 Country Club Drive at 11:39 p.m, the department said in a post on Facebook.Firefighters that arrived on scene first saw “heavy fire conditions” in the back of the restaurant. The fire struck three alarms, and backup was called in from seven area fire departments, according to the post. A separate news release from the Halifax Fire Department notes that the fire was kept to the restaurant and didn’t spread to the rest of the building. The fire is being investigated by the Halifax Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s office.

John Peck, who owns the restaurant, told WCVB there was mulch near the building that could have caught fire.
“We’ve got shrubbery around the building,” he said. “They surmise that somebody flipped a cigarette into the bark mulch going into the restaurant and then it smoldered for hours.”
However, a fire official reached by Boston.com said Monday morning that the fire remains under investigation and would not comment on if a cigarette butt was being considered as a cause.
