Randolph police looking into ‘suspicious’ van driver who offered young children candy

Officers are asking any parents of children who saw the van or were approached by its driver to contact police.

Randolph police are investigating after a “suspicious man” driving a van reportedly approached children Tuesday and offered them candy.

A concerned citizen told police she saw a suspicious brown van stop near Sam’s Gas and Auto Repair on South Main Street around 3:30 p.m. and then watched its driver offer a group of children lollipops.

The caller told officers the children were between 7 and 9 years old, according to a release.

She said she yelled at the children to not take the candy, and the driver and children then left.

Police located the driver for questioning, and the incident is under investigation.

Randolph Police Chief William Pace is asking that parents of any other children who were approached by this man contact his department.

“We are actively investigating this incident to determined exactly what transpired,” Pace said in the release. “We are asking parents to please have a discussion with your children, and please come forward if your child saw or heard anything or was approached by this suspicious driver.”

The release directed parents toward the National Crime Prevention Council’s website for resources on teaching children about strangers.
