‘On fire from his boxers to his chest’: Mechanic suffers life-threatening injuries in Mansfield gas station fire

One mechanic suffered life-threatening burns when a Mansfield gas station and auto repair shop was engulfed in flames Wednesday, officials said.
Employees of Canaan Fuels told various media outlets an explosion happened while one mechanic was welding near flammable windshield wiper fluid.
Witnesses told WBZ the mechanic was on fire as he ran out of the building.
“The man was on fire from his boxers to his chest,” bystander Shannon Adams told the station.
He was extinguished and ushered into a police cruiser before being taken to a Boston hospital via a MedFlight helicopter, police said.
WBZ reported the man was in his 60s and has been working at the shop for about 40 years.
Garage fires are especially precarious, Mansfield Fire Department Chief Neal Boldrighini said at a Wednesday press conference, since garages house so many flammable objects.
“We’ll have a determination report at a later date, but windshield washer fluid is alcohol-based,” Boldrighini told reporters.
Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the gas pumps, but video shows the main area of the shop engulfed in flames and billowing smoke.
Canaan Fuels plans to rebuild as soon as possible, according to a Facebook post.
The business could not be reached for comment Thursday morning.
