A 10-year-old girl reportedly died while eating carrots at her Worcester elementary school

“I’m still asking questions like how can someone just pass away from eating carrots?”

A 10-year-old girl reportedly died while eating a carrot at an elementary school in Worcester this month, and her family members say they have many questions about what happened.Marilyn Ofobi Korankyewaa was eating her snack at Belmont Community School when she reportedly began coughing, according to 7News. Her friend went to get help after she ran to the bathroom; she was then brought to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where she died a few days later after losing oxygen to her brain.Ofobi Korankyewaa’s uncle, Ken Asafo-Adjei, said the family was told that someone at the school attempted the Heimlich maneuver and CPR to resuscitate her.“But as to how it was done, who did, that’s a question maybe later we can ask,” he said.Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty told 7News he’s going to work on getting the family answers.“They’re looking for closure, so I think the idea is they want to know what happened exactly, a timeline, and I’m willing to do that,” he said.Maggie Bota, Ofobi Korankyewaa’s cousin, said it could have happened to her own children.“I’m still asking questions like how can someone just pass away from eating carrots?” she said.
