Authorities identify Cambridge woman killed by truck in Harvard Square

Sharon Hamer, 67, is being mourned by loved ones and former colleagues on social media.

Authorities have released the name of the Cambridge woman who was struck and killed by a truck in Harvard Square on Tuesday morningSharon Hamer, 67, was trying to cross Brattle Street near the Out of Town News stand when she was hit by a boom truck just before 7 a.m., according to the Middlesex district attorney’s office. The driver stayed at the scene, and Hamer was transported to a local hospital where she died.Friends and loved ones reacted with shock on social media as the news of the 67-year-old’s passing spread. CBS Boston reports Hamer was a retired Boston Public Schools librarian and a former board member of the Massachusetts School Library Association.“I am devastated,” Linda Coviello wrote on Facebook. “She was a gifted colleague, a wonderful friend and a vibrant individual. The world is less bright without her tonight.”Stephani Fried wrote that the Cambridge woman’s “giftedness” was “infectious.”“Sharon Hamer was pure love,” she wrote of her friend. “She had a lighthearted, hilarious nature. Sharon uplifted those around her with such kindness and mindfulness.”

The preliminary investigation indicates Hamer was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash, authorities said. As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed in connection to the crash, but an investigation was ongoing, the DA’s office said in a statement.
