Car pulled over for speeding, having police light bar; driver found not to be impersonating an officer

“Once again, a traffic stop proves you never know what you are going to see.”

After a state trooper pulled over a driver Wednesday he thought might be trying to impersonate police, he determined the man’s only infraction was speeding.

The trooper “came across this beauty,” a Chevrolet Caprice with a police light bar on its roof, on I-495 north in Raynham during the evening commute, state police said in a Facebook post. The vehicle was traveling 96 mph, and the trooper was concerned that the light bar made the vehicle look like a police car, according to police.

The light bar, though, wasn’t functional and had clear lenses, not blue ones. The driver, a 57-year-old Mansfield man, told the trooper he bought it at a used car dealership’s auction.

There was no evidence that the man was trying to impersonate a police officer, the post said, but he was fined $315 for speeding.

The trooper also notified Mansfield police that the car is in their town.

“Once again, a traffic stop proves you never know what you are going to see,” the post says.
