A driver fatally hit a golden retriever. She stopped but then took off without checking on the dog, police say.

Police say the vehicle sustained "extensive" damage in the crash.

A golden retriever was struck and killed by a vehicle in New Hampshire Thursday morning, and police are now trying to find the driver who left the scene.Barnstead police said the dog was hit around 6 a.m. on Route 28 northbound by a red sedan, thought to be a 2013 or 2014 Subaru Legacy or Outback, with New Hampshire plates. The vehicle then stopped near the old JJ’s Restaurant, and the driver and a passenger, who were both female, checked the vehicle before fleeing the scene, police said witnesses told them.Neither women went back to check on the dog, according to authorities.“Evidence found on scene and shown in photos indicates that the damage was extensive and are Subaru manufactured parts,” police said.The dog’s owner was notified.
