Man dies after contacting third rail at Central Square T station

The man had "jumped into the 'pit' area," according to a preliminary investigation.

A man died Monday after contacting the third rail that powers MBTA trains, police said. He was approximately 35.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. at the Central Square T station in Cambridge, according to a release. The man “jumped into the ‘pit’ area” of the tracks and contacted the third rail while there, according to a preliminary investigation.

The third rail’s power ranges from 600 to 30,000 volts, according to the MBTA website.

Foul play is not suspected in the incident, the release said.
