Officials cancel Cambridge Carnival due to ‘increasing safety concerns’
Cambridge officials and organizers of the event referenced the gun violence around Boston’s Caribbean Carnival last weekend.
Cambridge officials announced late Thursday that the 27th Annual Cambridge Carnival is canceled, citing concerns about safety and the gun violence near Boston’s Caribbean Carnival last weekend.In a joint statement, the City of Cambridge and organizers from Cambridge Carnival International said the safety of the community and carnival participants was paramount in making the decision to call off the event that had been scheduled for Sept. 8.“For the past 26 years, the Cambridge Carnival has been an important cultural event for the City of Cambridge and the greater region,” the statement reads. “However, there have been increasing safety concerns associated with this year’s event due in part to the gun violence that occurred last weekend in the immediate vicinity of Boston’s Caribbean Carnival Parade.”According to Boston police, two men exchanged gunfire around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday “in plain view” of officers assigned to the J’ouvert Parade near the Berkshire Partners Blue Hills Boys & Girls Club. Earlier in the morning, around 3:40 a.m., a man was fatally shot in the same area.The Cambridge Carnival Committee said Thursday on Facebook that they were sharing the update “with a heavy heart” and the group is looking at other options for “activities later this fall to celebrate and share our Caribbean heritage with pride.”
