‘She left a gaping hole in the lives of all those who loved her’: How the Kennedy family is remembering Saoirse Kennedy Hill

The 22-year-old granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy died Thursday after suffering an apparent drug overdose in Hyannis Port.

Members of the Kennedy family are sharing tributes on social media to Saoirse Kennedy Hill, who died of an apparent drug overdose on Thursday at the family’s compound in Hyannis Port.

The 22-year-old was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill and the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy. 

Her aunt, Kerry Kennedy, shared a statement from the entire family, which called out the  22-year-old’s “passionate” dedication to human rights and women’s empowerment.

“Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse,” the statement read. “Her life was filled with hope, promise and love. She cared deeply about friends and family, especially her mother Courtney, her father Paul, her stepmother Stephanie, and her grandmother Ethel, who said, ‘The world is a little less beautiful today.’ She lit up our lives with her love, her peals of laughter and her generous spirit.”

On Friday, Kerry Kennedy shared photos of her niece on social media with a simple messages of love. 

“We love you Saoirse,” she wrote, and, “Sweet Saoirse.”

Maria Schriver, the daughter of Eunice Kennedy Schriver and a niece of Robert F. Kennedy, said Friday in a statement that “a brave young woman left our world yesterday.”

“She left a gaping hole in the lives of all those who loved her dearly,” Shriver wrote.

“Saoirse will always remain in our hearts,” former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy wrote. “She is loved and will be deeply missed.”

Vicki Kennedy, the widow of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, retweeted the former congressman’s message with her own tribute. 

Saoirse Kennedy Hill was majoring in communications at Boston College and had written openly about her struggles with depression and mental illness while a student at Deerfield Academy.
