Those injured included four firefighters.
Fire tore through a Pepperell apartment building Tuesday morning, killing one woman and injuring five others, including four firefighters, fire officials said. What became a four-alarm fire at 50 Main St. was spotted by an off-duty fire lieutenant at 8:35 a.m., according to a news release.“He was leaving the supermarket, got on his portable radio and called in that there was fire and smoke showing, and requested an immediate second alarm,” Fire Chief Brian Borenman said in a press conference. “Upon my arrival, there was heavy fire showing from two windows on floor number one extending to the second and third floors.”Fire officials struck two additional alarms due to “heavy smoke and flames coming from the building,” the release said.
Injuries to the firefighters and resident brought to the hospital are not believed to be life threatening, according to the release. Firefighters from 13 communities helped bring the blaze under control.
The building housed six apartments, the release said. The fire is not thought to be suspicious.
“This was a very involved fire that required significant manpower to bring under control,” Borneman said in the release.
