91-year-old woman accidentally drives car into Springfield pool, escapes uninjured
She was standing on the driver’s seat with her head poking out the sunroof when firefighters arrived.
A 91-year-old woman — and her 2003 Mercury Sable — ended up in her neighbor’s swimming pool Sunday morning in Springfield.
“We’re not too sure of the circumstances yet,” Springfield Fire Commissioner B.J. Calvi said Monday.
Calvi said the woman’s car was submerged when firefighters arrived around 9:30 a.m., and she was standing on the driver’s seat with her head poking out of the sunroof.

He said officials believe the woman started out in her driveway and then either rolled or drove across Weymouth Street. The car then crashed through a fence and into the pool.
The woman may have suffered minor injuries, Calvi said, but she declined medical treatment and wasn’t taken to the hospital.
Though rare, Calvi said incidents like this aren’t unheard of.
“You’ll get one every once in a while,” he said. “But it was an out-of-the ordinary situation, and our crews on scene did an outstanding job.”
The Springfield Police Department is now investigating the situation.
