Great white sharks are back in Massachusetts waters, and, with the start of the beach-going season, officials on Cape Cod are on high alert.This week has already seen multiple beach closures due to shark sightings. On Tuesday, Newcomb Hollow in Wellfleet and South Beach in Edgartown were ordered closed to swimmers. Newcomb Hollow, the beach where a 26-year-old Revere man was fatally bitten by a shark last September, was closed again on Wednesday after another shark was spotted near the shore.
On Saturday, beaches on Cape Cod and Nantucket were peppered by a dozen shark sightings, leading to multiple closures in the late morning and afternoon, authorities told The Boston Globe.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy reminded beachgoers that August through October are the peak months for great white activity off Cape Cod.
“Whether or not a sighting is reported, we advise caution and recommend not venturing beyond waist deep water,” the nonprofit cautioned swimmers.

As of Thursday afternoon, the conservancy’s app that tracks shark sightings in the state — Sharktivity — listed more than a handful of reports of the ocean predators over the last 48 hours.
