Authorities have said that officers responded to radio calls reporting gunfire near Town Field in Dorchester around 5:15 p.m. on Monday. When they arrived, the officers saw two suspects, later identified as Ellerbe and 21-year-old Ernest Watkin of Dorchester, fleeing the scene, police said. Watkin was arrested on Tuesday night and arraigned in Dorchester Municipal Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. According to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office, Watkin was charged as a Level 1 armed career criminal, having previously been convicted and served a sentence for involuntary manslaughter for the 2012 homicide of 39-year-old Cherby LaJoie.

Bail was set at $25,000 on Wednesday for Watkins, and, if released, he will be ordered to remain under home confinement and wear a GPS monitor, according to the DA’s office.
