High school freshman dies in apparent drowning in Clinton
Police were called to Blueberry Island in South Meadow Pond just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.
A high school freshman is dead after Clinton police say they were called to Blueberry Island in South Meadow Pond for a possible drowning just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.First responders reached the victim, identified as Rafael Perez by the Clinton school district, by boat with the help of a resident, according to police. Emergency personnel began trying to revive him, and then brought him back to shore near Pine Street. He was then taken to Clinton Hospital.Clinton police, along with state police detectives from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating, police said. No other information was released.“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Clinton High School Freshman Rafael Perez,” school Superintendent Steven Meyer said in a statement Tuesday. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time. Clinton High School is open this evening for students, staff, and community members who wish to come together to grieve this tragic event. Clinton High School will have additional guidance staff available on Wednesday morning to support the Clinton High School students and staff.”
