9-year-old boy dies after being pulled from Hopkinton lake

Jorge Santiago succumbed to his injuries at a Worcester hospital, authorities say.

A 9-year-old boy who was pulled out of a Hopkinton lake Sunday evening has died, police confirmed Monday.

Jorge Santiago succumbed to his injuries at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester early Monday morning, according to a statement from Hopkinton police.

Authorities received multiple 911 calls around 5:01 p.m. Sunday reporting that a boy had “disappeared beneath the water” off Lake Maspenock’s Sandy Beach, on the lake’s western shore, officials said.

“Upon arrival at the beach, police utilized civil bystanders, already on scene to begin a search of the area where the boy had been last seen,” police said. “Within minutes the boy was located and life saving measures were (started) by members of the Hopkinton Fire Department.”

Santiago was brought to Milford Regional Medical Center and then flown by helicopter to UMass Memorial, according to authorities.

He later died from his injuries, police learned around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

According to officials, Hopkinton schools will offer counseling services to students. The Hopkinton Department of Youth and Family Services is also putting together a “wider community support response,” police said.

“They have begun connecting with citizens who have been impacted and have offered their services,” the statement says. “Additionally, Hopkinton Youth and Family Services will be available between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. throughout the week. Staff members are Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers and are specially trained in this form of care.”
