Child, grandmother struck by a car while using crosswalk in Worcester, police say

"The child and stroller were pulled under the Malibu, which was lifted up by witnesses, including DPW workers, so the child could be freed."

A small child and her grandmother sustained “serious lower body injuries” after they were struck by a vehicle while using a crosswalk near 307 Chandler St. in Worcester Wednesday morning, according to police.Officials were called to the scene around 10 a.m., police said. The grandmother and child were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, but have broken bones.Through an early investigation, police believe a Toyota Prius was traveling westbound on Chandler Street when it stopped near 307 Chandler St. to allow the pedestrians to cross — they were waiting at a crosswalk. That’s when police say a Chevy Malibu, also traveling westbound, rear ended the Prius, crossed into the opposite lane, and struck the pedestrians. The Malibu then hit a pole and knocked it down.“The child and stroller were pulled under the Malibu, which was lifted up by witnesses, including DPW workers, so the child could be freed,” police said. Two people within the Prius were also taken to a hospital for what were believed to be minor injuries, according to police. Both cars were towed, and police are continuing to investigate what happened.
