Driver charged after head-on crash with police cruiser in Tewksbury
The crash occurred around 6:46 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.
A police cruiser and a van were involved in a head-on crash in Tewksbury early Tuesday morning, and now the van driver is being charged, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.Authorities believe the Tewksbury officer was traveling eastbound on Route 133 when the van, operated by Jorge Joel Gomez Guzman, 21, of Lawrence, and traveling on the opposite side of the road, crossed the center line and struck the cruiser near Cooney Road around 6:46 a.m., an email from the district attorney’s office said.Guzman is being charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, and having a vehicle not registered properly, according to the email.Both Guzman and the police officer were brought to nearby hospitals, where they’re being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, the email said. Guzman is in police custody, but his arraignment hasn’t been scheduled.An investigation into what happened is ongoing.
