New Hampshire parents charged after child is injured while exercising as punishment, police say
Authorities said the couple did not seek medical treatment for the child.
A New Hampshire father and stepmother are facing charges after their child was made to exercise as a form of punishment and was injured, authorities said Friday.
The couple, who was not identified in order to protect the child, failed to seek medical attention when their child was hurt, according to a statement from the Winchester, New Hampshire Police Department.
Police and the state Department of Children, Youth and Families launched an investigation in February based upon a report of child abuse, officials said.
The report said the father “had the child perform an exercise for punitive reasons which resulted in the child sustaining injuries” and that neither parent sought treatment for the child afterward, the statement said.
Authorities immediately took steps “to ensure the welfare and safety of the child” during the probe, according to officials.
As a result of their review, investigators have charged each parent with “endangering welfare of a child or incompetent,” police said.
The father and stepmother were notified of their arrest warrants on Wednesday and turned themselves into police, officials said.
They were released on a summons to appear in Keene District Court at a later date.
