Ipswich man killed after car pins him in his garage, police say

"All indications at this time are that this was a tragic accident."

A 45-year-old Ipswich man was killed Tuesday when the car he was repairing in his garage fell and injured him, according to police.

Police and fire department responders arrived at an Avery Street residence around 7:28 p.m. after receiving an emergency call, authorities said in a statement.

“Upon arrival, rescuers discovered that a Volvo motor vehicle had pinned the male resident to the floor of the garage,” officials said. “Police officers extricated the victim from underneath the car and began to render emergency medical care.”

The man, identified as Stewart Rudnicki, was brought to Beverly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Ipswich police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.

An initial review indicates Rudnicki was repairing the Volvo using a jack “when the car fell to the ground, mortally wounding him,” according to the release.

“All indications at this time are that this was a tragic accident,” police Chief Paul Nikas said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of Rudnicki’s death, officials said.
