Authorities in the Boston area are increasing patrols around houses of worship Friday following the mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand that killed at least 49 people.The Islamic Society of Boston said in a statement that security would be increased at its Cambridge location Friday. “We are also working closely with Cambridge Police Department whom we already contacted and as usual been prompt and very helpful,” the organization said. “Please be vigilant and never let fear gets into you.”

Cambridge police said the department is coordinating with leaders in the city’s faith community.
“Places of worship should be places where all can congregate without fear,” the department said. “As always, we will do our part to support that through increased attention with our patrols and ongoing dialogue with faith leaders to ensure enhanced peace of mind.”

A spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department told Boston.com patrols around houses of worship and mosques in Boston are also being “stepped up” on Friday.
The Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center said in a statement that Mayor Marty Walsh and Boston Police Commissioner William Gross would be attending prayer services in Roxbury on Friday to express “support and solidarity.”
“In Boston, we are a community that sticks together,” the organization said. “Tragedy after tragedy, Bostonians from diverse faiths and backgrounds have come together, supported one another, and spoke out against hate. We do not let fear and hate bully us. We expect nothing less this time. We are Boston Strong.”
